In a world where millions struggle with poor access to sanitation and water facilities, Banka BioLoo stands out as a beacon of hope, offering sustainable solutions that positively impact lives. We had the privilege of sitting down with the trailblazing CEO of Banka BioLoo, who shared her inspiring journey from being a concerned homemaker to becoming a successful social entrepreneur. In this exclusive interview, she opens up about the driving force behind Banka BioLoo, the challenges faced in scaling the business, and the innovative technologies transforming the landscape of sanitation and wastewater management.
Q1: What inspired you to start Banka BioLoo, and how did you transition from a homemaker to a successful social entrepreneur?
The problem of poor access to sanitation and water facilities in India, particularly for women, deeply concerned me as a homemaker. While traveling with my children, I witnessed their reluctance to use train toilets, and it became unbearable. When I saw an opportunity to work in this area, it ignited a passion in me, and Banka BioLoo became my mission.
Q2: How did you scale your business from $20,000 to a $2 million IPO, overcoming challenges along the way?
Initially, scaling was slow, as sanitation wasn’t a subject of mainstream discussion. However, with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign) gaining momentum, we received significant support and encouragement from the government. Going public through an IPO on the SME platform enabled us to raise funds that further fueled our growth.
Q3: What innovative technologies does Banka BioLoo use to address sanitation and water needs sustainably?
At Banka BioLoo, we employ technologies like DRDO Biodigester, Johkasou (Japanese Technology), and Standard Wastewater Treatment to design and develop tailored solutions for clients. These technologies allow us to efficiently manage wastewater while addressing various sanitation challenges.
Q4: How does Banka BioLoo approach partnerships to achieve long-term goals and promote coexistence?
Partnerships play a crucial role in our journey. We focus on collaborating, connecting, and creating sales partners to extend the reach of our solutions. By working together with other organizations and stakeholders, we can amplify our impact and foster coexistence.
Q5: Tell us about the upcoming product launch of the JOHKASOU-based STP from Aqua Nirihara and its impact on reducing power consumption.
The JOHKASOU-based STP is a game-changer in sewage treatment. Housed in a single unit, it uses a gravity flow and recirculation system, eliminating the need for energy consumption. The aeration system utilizes efficient, silent root blowers, significantly reducing power usage while delivering excellent results.
Q6: How does this technology address sewage treatment challenges in India and promote better sanitation practices?
The JOHKASOU-based STP offers a compact, modular design that fits into small spaces and can replace traditional septic tanks. Its low energy consumption and ease of maintenance make it an ideal solution for addressing sewage treatment challenges in India. With its Japanese technology, this innovation aligns with Banka BioLoo’s commitment to promoting better sanitation practices.
Q7: What led to the decision to introduce the JOHKASOU-based STP to the Indian market and align it with Banka BioLoo’s mission?
The increasing demand for wastewater treatment and reuse, coupled with the push for pollution control board discharge compliance, prompted us to introduce the JOHKASOU-based STP. Its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with our mission to make sanitation accessible to all made it an ideal fit for the Indian market.
Q8: How does Banka BioLoo plan to create awareness and promote the adoption of this technology among stakeholders?
We are planning to showcase the JOHKASOU-based STP to various industrial associations and clusters in Hyderabad. By spreading awareness about water management and reuse options, we aim to make industries water-positive and secure.
Q9: What are your expectations for the market response to the JOHKASOU-based STP and its contribution to India’s sustainable development goals?
We have great confidence in the JOHKASOU-based STP, having worked with it for almost three years. With our technology partner, Aqua Nishihara, assisting in setting up manufacturing in India, the product will be easily accessible and cost-effective. We envision the STP making significant strides toward India’s sustainable development goals.
Q10: As a mentor to women-led enterprises, what advice would you give aspiring female entrepreneurs looking to scale their businesses and make a positive impact?
Women are fearless changemakers, and I am one among them. The community is strong and supportive, so don’t hesitate to connect and seek help. Reach out to fellow women entrepreneurs for support, guidance, and inspiration. Together, we can make a lasting positive impact.
With a mission-driven CEO at the helm, Banka BioLoo continues to forge ahead, transforming the landscape of sanitation and wastewater management in India, and empowering change for a brighter, more sustainable future.
