Surat, Gujarat – Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary initiative for water conservation, the “Catch the Rain” campaign, is rapidly evolving into a mass movement, reflecting a deep commitment to safeguarding this vital resource for future generations. During a virtual launch on September 6 from Surat’s Indoor Stadium, PM Modi emphasized, “Water conservation is not just a project but a sacred cause for the future generations. Water is not just a resource, but a key issue for the survival of humanity.”
In just one month since its inception, the campaign has gained remarkable momentum in Gujarat, with 8,817 water conservation projects initiated through active public participation. Of these, over 4,588 projects have already been completed, while 4,229 are currently in progress, poised to significantly enhance the state’s water storage capacity.
The “Catch the Rain” initiative aims to raise awareness and encourage community involvement in rainwater harvesting. PM Modi articulated the initiative’s broader vision: “Water conservation is a sacred duty, and the unprecedented results achieved through public participation will serve as an inspiration for the world in the coming days.”
To further this cause, the Ministry of Jal Shakti has devised a phased plan to expand the initiative nationwide. A special event is scheduled at Surat’s Indoor Stadium on Sunday, where the campaign will be launched in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar. This event will feature key dignitaries, including Union Minister of Jal Shakti, CR Patil, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary.
Prominent leaders from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar, who have made Surat their home, are set to spearhead the “Catch the Rain” campaign in their respective states. They have committed to undertaking four water conservation projects in nearly every village across their districts, with significant announcements expected during the event.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, PM Modi underscored the collective responsibility in tackling water scarcity amid the challenges posed by climate change. “India holds only 4% of the world’s potable water, and groundwater levels are rapidly depleting in many regions,” he noted, urging citizens to unite for water conservation. He expressed confidence that with public participation, the campaign will play a crucial role in addressing these pressing issues.
With PM Modi’s profound vision and the Ministry of Jal Shakti’s proactive approach, the “Catch the Rain” campaign is set to transform water conservation efforts across the country, harnessing the power of community engagement for a sustainable future. As preparations for the second phase of the initiative are underway, the movement continues to inspire hope and action towards securing water for generations to come.
