Lawrence Schools and BBMP Launch Climate Action Clubs, Honor Pourakarmikas in Bengaluru

Published:

Bengaluru, August 28, 2025 – Lawrence Schools in HSR and Koramangala took a significant step toward fostering environmental consciousness by launching their ClimateAction Clubs on August 28, 2025, at the Lawrence School HSR campus. The event, organized in collaboration with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), underscored the city’s commitment to engaging youth in climate action and sustainable civic practices.

A poignant highlight of the event was the felicitation of Bengaluru’s pourakarmikas, the city’s dedicated waste management workers, celebrated as frontline warriors in the fight for a cleaner environment. Mr. Maruthi, BBMP Pourakarmika Supervisor, addressed the students, sharing insights into the challenges faced by pourakarmikas and urging the young audience to take responsibility for waste segregation and cleanliness. His powerful message, encapsulated in the slogan “Namma Parisara, Namma Jawabdari; Namma Kasa Nammadu” (Our environment, our responsibility; our waste is ours to manage), resonated deeply with attendees.

Mr. Suraj SK, Local Climate Action and Civic Engagement Fellow at BBMP’s Climate Action Cell, emphasized the urgency of youth-led climate initiatives, noting that over 769 schools and colleges across Bengaluru have joined the Climate Action Clubs initiative. “The changing weather in Bengaluru reminds us of the urgency. The children in these clubs will not just be participants, they will be the leaders who drive the changes we need,” he said, encouraging students to adopt sustainable practices and envision themselves as future changemakers.

The event also featured the unveiling of the Climate Action Club logos, designed by students Arpitha from Lawrence Koramangala and Ansh from Lawrence HSR. The students explained the symbolism behind their logos, showcasing their creative commitment to sustainability. Ms. Pushpa Subbaiah, Managing Trustee of Lawrence HSR, and Ms. Supriya Johnson, Principal, addressed the gathering, highlighting the realities of climate change, including cloudbursts and global warming, while expressing gratitude to BBMP workers for their tireless service. Ms. Supriya formally launched the Climate Action Club at Lawrence HSR, reaffirming the school’s dedication to nurturing environmentally responsible citizens.

Guided by the Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA), the newly formed clubs will engage students in campus audits, awareness campaigns, and hands-on projects aimed at building climate resilience and driving measurable change. The event concluded with students taking the Climate Action Club Oath, pledging to protect the environment and lead efforts for a sustainable Bengaluru.
This initiative marks a promising step toward empowering Bengaluru’s youth to tackle climate challenges and foster a greener, cleaner city.
