In a decisive win, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has triumphed over Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the fiercely contested Delhi Assembly elections, securing a sweeping victory. The AAP has suffered a significant setback, with key leaders, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, losing their seats. Meanwhile, the Congress continued its dismal performance from the past two elections, failing to secure a single seat in the 70-member assembly.
According to a few sources, BJP has won 48 out of the 70 assembly seats, while AAP, led by outgoing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, managed to secure only 22 seats. This outcome marks the first time since 1998 that BJP has taken control of Delhi’s administration.
Parvesh Sahib Singh, who defeated Kejriwal, has emerged as one of the BJP’s top contenders for the Chief Minister’s post. However, AAP’s Atishi managed to retain her seat from the Kalkaji constituency, while Manish Sisodia conceded defeat in Jangpura.
Most exit polls had forecast a BJP victory, which was confirmed as results unfolded. The elections, held in a single phase on February 5, recorded a voter turnout of 60.54%. During its campaign, the BJP focused on issues such as the pollution in the Yamuna River, alleged irregularities in Delhi’s liquor policy involving Kejriwal and Sisodia, and the controversial expenses on the Chief Minister’s residence during the COVID-19 pandemic.
