Indian Cancer Genome Atlas Launches First-of-its-Kind Multi-omics Data Portal

Published:

Pune, September 20, 2024: A transformative leap in cancer research in India was achieved today with the launch of the Indian Cancer Genome Atlas (ICGA) multi-omics data portal. This innovative platform provides open access to clinically correlated data from Indian cancer patients, aiming to revolutionize cancer research and treatment tailored to the Indian population. Historically, cancer treatments in India have depended on Western datasets, which may not reflect the unique molecular characteristics of cancers affecting Indian patients. The ICGA’s mission is to develop Indian-specific datasets, empowering researchers and clinicians to create personalized treatment protocols.

The multi-omics data portal is the first of its kind in India, offering comprehensive data—including DNA, RNA, and protein profiles—specifically for breast cancer patients, along with integrated clinical outcomes. Initially featuring data from 50 patients, the platform plans to expand to over 500 in the coming year. This critical data is freely accessible to the global research community under India’s PRIDE guidelines, promoting ethical sharing and collaboration in cancer research. Key features include detailed multi-omics data for breast cancer patients, built on the internationally recognized cBioPortal platform for seamless integration with global cancer research efforts, and clinically annotated profiles, including treatment histories and patient outcomes.

Statements from key figures reflect the significance of this initiative. Professor Shekhar C. Mande, Former DG-CSIR and Senior Professor at Savitribai Phule Pune University, noted, “Making this invaluable cancer data publicly accessible marks a pivotal step in accelerating scientific discoveries and enhancing patient outcomes.” Dr. JC Zenklusen, Director of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) at the NCI, NIH, USA, expressed excitement about ICGA’s rapid advancements, while Prof. Sunil Badve from Emory University emphasized the global impact of understanding cancer genomics for Indian patients. Dr. Anand Deshpande, Chairman and Managing Director at Persistent, highlighted that the portal will empower researchers with crucial data for advancing customized cancer research.

The launch of the ICGA cancer multi-omics data portal represents a significant milestone in India’s cancer research landscape. By providing valuable data and fostering collaboration, this initiative has the potential to accelerate scientific discoveries and improve the lives of cancer patients across the nation.
