Christ University, headquartered in Bengaluru, is pioneering a transformative approach to sustainability education, aligning its efforts with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). What sets Christ University apart is that these initiatives are not confined to a mere club or occasional events but are driven by the students, making and measuring their initiatives’ significant impact at the grassroots level. This student-led approach is a source of pride for the entire community, demonstrating their active involvement in shaping a sustainable future.

The journey began in 2021 when Christ University established its University-wide SDG Cell headed by Dr.Leena James, a dedicated platform to integrate sustainability into every facet of campus life. The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Dr. Father Jose CC, formalised this initiative, envisioning SDG education as a fundamental part of the university’s mission, ensuring that every department and stakeholder is aligned with these global goals.

Unlike many institutions where sustainability efforts are limited to occasional activities, Christ University’s approach is “comprehensive and deeply embedded in its academic and campus experience’s fabric.” The SDG Cell’s work permeates all departments, with faculty members and students actively fulfilling specific SDG targets.

According to Dr Leena James, the Head of Sustainability at Christ University, this holistic integration ensures that sustainability is not just an academic subject but a lived experience for the entire college community, actioning on the University’s commitment and inspiring them to remain committed.

The University’s commitment to sustainability is rooted in its long-standing value of social responsibility, a core principle that predates the formal adoption of the UN SDGs in 2015. The Centre for Social Action (CSA), active for over 25 years, plays a crucial role in this mission. Under the leadership of Dr Victor Paul, also a core committee member of the SDG Cell, CSA has been a driving force in community engagement and sustainable practices. Dr James, deeply believes that this commitment to social responsibility is a source of inspiration and pride for the entire college community.

At Christ University, students are always educated to be catalysts for change in the society. They are not just sustainability initiatives’ advocates, but also planners and implementers. Each department has designated representatives who coordinate SDG-related activities, ensuring that the entire student body and faculty is involved in meaningful ways. Dr James notes the SDG Cell has raised awareness among students, with over 2,500 SDG advocates actively working towards these goals.

The impact of Christ University’s sustainability efforts extends beyond the campus. The college collaborates with NGOs, corporations, and other educational institutions, both in India and internationally to enrich their sustainability initiatives, bringing in diverse perspectives and expertise. Notably, their particular partnership with The Future Founders Co. has enabled their impact to scale globally, with the University students representing the university at a pan-Asian innovation program, showcasing their commitment to sustainable development on an international stage.

Looking ahead, Christ University aims to become a United Nations Academic Impact Hub, further solidifying its role as a leader in sustainability education. According to Dr James, the college’s vision is to instil in its “students a lifelong commitment to sustainable development,” ensuring that they “carry forward these values into their professional and personal lives.”

Christ University’s student-led approach to sustainability is not just about meeting global targets; it’s about creating a lasting impact that begins on campus and extends to the wider world. By empowering students to lead the charge, Christ University is setting a new standard for how educational institutions can contribute to a sustainable future.
