Apple Set to Create 6 Lakh Jobs in India by FY25

New Delhi, August 27, 2024: Tech giant Apple is poised to significantly expand its operations in India, creating an estimated 6 lakh jobs by the end of the current fiscal year (FY25). This major expansion aligns with Apple’s strategy to diversify its manufacturing base beyond China and mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on a single region.

According to a report by Economic Times, Apple is expected to directly employ around 2 lakh workers in India by FY25. Notably, the company aims for women to constitute 70% of this workforce, demonstrating its commitment to gender diversity and empowerment in the tech industry.

Given that each direct job in the electronics sector typically creates three indirect jobs, Apple’s expansion could lead to the creation of between 5 and 6 lakh additional jobs in India, providing a substantial boost to the local economy and employment landscape.

Since the introduction of the smartphone production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme in 2020, Apple’s partners, including Foxconn, Tata, Pegatron, Foxlink, Salcomp, and Motherson, have generated around 1.65 lakh direct jobs in the country. This initiative has played a crucial role in transforming India into a key hub for Apple’s global manufacturing strategy.

In preparation for the upcoming launch of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models, Apple has started training workers at its Tamil Nadu facility. Foxconn, Apple’s manufacturing partner, is expected to commence assembly of these premium devices within weeks, further contributing to the employment surge.

Apple’s expansion in India not only reflects its strategic shift to mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on Chinese manufacturing but also highlights India’s growing prominence as a global electronics manufacturing hub. As the company continues to scale up its operations, the impact on local employment and economic growth is expected to be substantial, reinforcing India’s position as a crucial player in the global technology landscape.
