Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is set to unveil a dedicated space policy by December 31, 2024, with a strong focus on nurturing startups and MSMEs in the sector. IT Minister Priyank Kharge announced the development, highlighting the policy’s emphasis on skill development, incubation, innovation, and research.
The state is currently engaging in extensive consultations with industry stakeholders to ensure the policy aligns with the needs of startups, MSMEs, and the broader aerospace industry. This initiative marks a significant step forward, as Karnataka becomes one of the first states in India to introduce a standalone space policy.
The policy is expected to create a conducive environment for private sector participation in the space sector, positioning Karnataka as a leader in this rapidly evolving field. The government is also considering the establishment of exclusive zones for space companies within aerospace and defense parks to encourage exports.
Potential applications of space technology, as outlined in the policy, include satellite-based communication, forest cover mapping, coastal zone monitoring, and weather forecasting.
