Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, marking the beginning of a significant event in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). GPAI, a multi-stakeholder initiative with 29 member countries, is dedicated to bridging the gap between AI theory and practice through cutting-edge research and applied activities.
India, as the lead chair of GPAI in 2024, assumes a central role in the summit’s proceedings. The event, taking place from December 12-14, 2023, features diverse sessions covering topics such as AI and global health, education, skilling, data governance, and machine learning workshops. Attendees can also explore the Research Symposium, AI Gamechangers Award, and the India AI Expo.
Over 50 GPAI experts and 150 speakers from various countries are expected to participate in the summit, including top AI companies like Intel, Reliance Jio, Google, Meta, AWS, and Microsoft. The event will also provide a platform for winners of India’s YUVA AI initiative and startups to showcase their AI models and solutions.
During his address, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s position as a leader in AI talent and innovation, underscoring the vibrant spirit of AI exploration among Indian youth. He cited examples of AI applications in agriculture, healthcare, and sustainable development, emphasizing the government’s commitment to “AI for All.”
The Prime Minister outlined India’s initiatives, including the National Program on Artificial Intelligence and the forthcoming AI Mission, designed to harness AI’s potential for social development and inclusive growth. He stressed the importance of transparency, ethics, and inclusivity in AI development, highlighting the need to address ethical, economic, and social aspects while ensuring data protection and upskilling opportunities.
Modi called for a global framework for the ethical use of AI and emphasized collaboration to enhance AI’s credibility. He posed questions regarding AI testing, duration, and the introduction of a Software Watermark to mark AI-generated content.
The Prime Minister suggested using AI to provide digital services in local languages, preserve endangered languages, and advance Sanskrit literature. He concluded by expressing confidence that the GPAI Summit will yield valuable insights, contributing to a responsible and sustainable future in AI.
