In a glorious tribute to a six-decade-long illustrious career, the government of India has announced that veteran actress Waheeda Rehman will be bestowed with this year’s Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The 85-year-old actress, a luminous presence in the golden era of Bollywood, is revered for her timeless beauty and her iconic roles in classics such as Pyaasa, Guide, and Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur extolled Ms. Rehman’s unparalleled commitment and dedication to Indian cinema and her impactful philanthropic work after her active years in the film industry. The minister acknowledged Ms. Rehman’s embodiment of a “Bharatiya Nari” achieving professional excellence with hard work and depicted the award as a well-deserved homage to one of the leading ladies of Indian Cinema.

Waheeda Rehman initiated her cinematic journey at the tender age of 17 with a debut in the Telugu film, Rojulu Marayi, in 1955. Her effervescent performance in CID skyrocketed her fame, marking the onset of a new star in Bombay. The news of the accolade was warmly welcomed by Ms. Rehman, especially as it coincided with the birthday of the late Dev Anand, her esteemed collaborator and co-star in many films.

The accolade has evoked a resonance of admiration and respect for Ms. Rehman’s versatile artistry from various quarters, including Amitabh Bachchan, who termed her as India’s most graceful woman, and former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan.
